What We'll Learn in Physical Education Class

Grades 1-5 attend Physical Education class twice a week, for 45 minutes each time. Students participate in a variety of activities aimed at increasing their heart rate, developing a general understanding of the benefits of a good diet, and understanding the importance of hard work and cooperation in attempting to reach a common goal.

In addition, grades 3-5 student will be given homework assignments which will be done outside of PE class:

Grade 3: Sportsmanship Project

Grade 4: 4 Components of Fitness

Grade 5: 4 Components of a Healthy Body

Twice a year (Sept and April-May), students will participate in our Physical Fitness Assessments. Students in Grades 1 and 2 participate in a limited number of events as a means of introducing the topic. Grades 3-5 students participate and record their scores in the following events:

1. Maximum push-ups

2. 1 minute maximum sit-ups

3. Timed 1/2 mile (3rd grade) and Timed mile (4 and 5)

4. Maximum pull ups

5. Sit and reach (flexibility test)

6. Shuttle run (agility test)

Students are asked to give their best effort throughout the fitness testing. The objective of the testing is for the students to recognize the fitness progress they have made throughout the school year. The Francis Wyman Fitness Score Records are on display in our gymnasium and are intended to motivate the students to reach their maximum potential in hopes of "making the wall".
